Maxim Kontsevich has established a reputation in pure mathematics andtheoretical physics, with influential ideas and deep insights. He hasbeen influenced by the work of Richard Feynmann and Edward Witten. Kontsevichis an expert in the so-called "string theory" and in quantum field theory. Hemade his name with contributions to four problems of geometry. He was able toprove a conjecture of Witten and demonstrate the mathematical equivalenceof two models of so-called quantum gravitation. The quantum theory ofgravity is an intermediate step towards a complete unified theory. Itharmonizes physical theories of the macrocosm (mass attraction) and themicrocosm (forces between elementary particles). Another result of Kontsevichrelates to knot theory. Kontsevich, Maxim (1964– )

Russian‐born French mathematician who made major contributions to mathematical physics. He received the Fields Medal in 1998 and the Crafoord Prize in 2008.

Maxim Kontsevich was born at Khimki (Russia) on 25 August 1964. He studied mathematics at Moscow University and worked at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics at Bonn, where he completed his doctoral thesis in 1992. After stays at Princeton and Berkeley, he arrived at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES) in Paris in 1995, where he holds a permanent professorship.

Growing up in the USSR, Kontsevich was successful in union‐wide maths competitions. Yet, he did not attain academic glory until 1991, when he attended a meeting in Germany and solved a conjecture proposed by Fields medalist Michael Atiyah (1929–2019). Friedrich Hirzebruch (1927–2012), a director at the Max Planck Institute of Mathematics at Bonn, spotted his problem‐solving talent and invited him to join his institute for a year, which led to his doctorate and an international career.
