Francesco Tamagno was born in Turin on December 28th 1850.
The son of an innkeeper, Tamagno studied at Turin as a pupil of Pedrotti.

Francesco Tamagno was known as a strong clarion-like voice, a tenor who benefited from the disciplinary teachings of the “Italian old school voice lineage”. Tamagno created Otello under supervision of Giuseppe Verdi himself.

Unfortunately, Tamagno’s vocal prime falls into a period where in recording of sound was not yet invented. In 1903 the reportedly sick Tamagno (53 years of age) recorded several aria’s with the primitive recording methods of the time. Some of the CD’s we can buy today of this recording session are issued with several takes of each aria.

Reading up on Tamagno through reviews written during his vocal prime, one can still match a lot to what we can hear on the records. Tamagno’s voice, although obviously thinned out due to age and sickness, still shows a clarion-like quality and exceptionally easy delivery. The vowels are very clear, and despite age and sickness, the voice shows no signs of a wobble. Biography:Francisco Tamagno(1851-1923/33, Portugal) was born in Sintra, Portugal, in 1851. Originally starting out as a portrait painter, he moved to Paris in the 1880s where he worked as the lead designer for the Camis printing house.

Tamagno is particularly known for his bicycle poster designs he created for Terrot Cycles, which featured a female rider turning to give a characteristic crooked-arm gesture. He also designed posters for Chamonix-Mont Blanc, Peugeot, and Cycles Wonder.

Little else is known of Tamagno's biography. Even the date of his death is uncertain, with both 1923 and 1933 cited.

Francesco Tamagno (28 December 1850 – 31 August 1905) was an Italian operaticdramatic tenor who sang with enormous success throughout Europe and America.^[1] On 5 February 1887, he sang Otello in the first performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera.^[2] He is also the earliest Italian tenor of note to have left a sizeable body of recordings of his voice. He was one of the first international male public figures to admit that he was the single parent and caregiver of a daughter from her birth.^{[citation needed]}

Musical significance

The most famous heroic tenor of his age, Tamagno performed in 26 countries, gaining renown for the power of his singing, especially in the upper register. Tamagno was among the rare species of singers known as a tenore robusto or tenore di forza, and critics likened the sound of his voice to that of a trumpet or even a cannon. Tamagno's vocal range extended up to high C-sharp during his prime, but he was no mere ”belter” of high notes; his recordings provide evidence of
