Biography

Lino A. Saputo holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Concordia University and a Doctor of Laws honoris causa from St. Francis Xavier University. He officially joined Saputo in 1988 as an Administrative Assistant and started rising through the ranks. After managing a plant in Ontario, Canada, he held various positions of increasing responsibility, leading to his appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Company in 2004. Lino was named Chair of the Board in 2017, and added the role of President to his responsibilities in 2022.

In December 2023, he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada, a distinction conferred by the Office of the Secretary of the Governor General. In August 2024, Lino transitioned from President and CEO of Saputo Inc. to the role of Executive Chair of the Board.

Emanuele "Lino" Saputo, CM OQ (Italian:[emanuˈɛːleliːnosaˈpuːto]; born June 10, 1937) is an Italian-Canadian billionaire businessman. He is the founder of the Canadian cheese manufacturer Saputo Inc. According to Forbes, he has an estimated net worth of US$4.7 billion as of November 2022.[1]

Early life

Saputo was born in Montelepre, Sicily, Italy, in 1937, to Giuseppe Saputo, a cheesemaker, and his wife Maria. Giuseppe and Frank, his eldest son, immigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1950, and two years later, Lino joined his father and brother in Canada, along with his mother Maria, his brother Luigi, as well as his sisters Rosalia, Elina, Maria and Antonina.[2]

Career

Saputo became chairman of the board and president of Saputo Inc. in 1969, and he was named chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) in 1997[3] when the company went public. In March 2004, his son Lino Saputo Jr. was appointed to the position of president and CEO, while Saputo continued as the company

1950

From Italy to Canada

Master cheesemaker Giuseppe Saputo and Frank, his eldest son, left their small village of Montelepre, close to Palermo, Sicily, and immigrated to Canada, convinced it was the ideal country to provide a better future for their family in the wake of the Second World War.

1952

A family reunited

Two years later, Lino Saputo joined his father and brother in Canada, along with his mother Maria, his brother Luigi, as well as his sisters Rosalia, Elina, Maria and Antonina.

1954

From a dream to reality

After two years spent in Montréal, Lino Saputo convinced his father, Giuseppe, to start his own business. In September 1954, using $500 to buy some basic equipment and a bicycle for deliveries, the Saputo family founded a cheese making company bearing its name. Saputo quickly established itself in Montréal’s Italian community.
