Karel Fleischmann was born on February 22, 1897, in Klatovy, Austro-Hungary (Czech Republic), to Adolf and Frantiska Fleischmann. Karel’s father, Adolf, was born in the mid-1800s in the Czech region of Austro-Hungary and was a graphic artist and lithographer. Karel’s mother, Frantiska, was born in 1865. Karel had 2 sisters, Marta and Klara, and a brother. While Karel was still in school, the Fleischmann family moved to Ceske Budejovice, Austro-Hungary (Czech Republic), which had a small Jewish population. Karel was a talented artist, but his father insisted that he acquire a profession. When Karel graduated, he moved to Prague to attend medical school. He graduated with a specialty in dermatology. - Ink drawing of a large crowd milling around a wagon being loaded with coffins drawn by Dr. Karel Fleischmann when he was a prisoner in Theresienstadt ghetto-labor camp from April 1942-October 1944. After the war, the drawing belonged to fellow Theresienstadt inmates, Irma and Jiri Lauscher, who gave it as a present to their cousin and fellow Terezin inmate, Hana Schiff Bruml. In April 1942, Fleischmann and his family were transported to the camp. Fleischmann, a medical doctor, was made assistant director of the health department. In October 1944, Fleischmann and his family were deported to Auschwitz and killed. In December 1942, Jiri and Irma Lauscher, and daughter Michaela, 5, arrived in camp. Jiri, an artisan, was assigned to the technical department. Irma organized and taught clandestine children's classes. In October 1944, Hana Schiff and her husband Rudolf arrived. In December 1943, Rudolf was deported to Auschwitz and killed. In October 1944, Hana was deported to Auschwitz, transferred to Kudowa-Sackisch

Dr Karel Fleischmann was born in Klatovy (Czechoslovakia) on 22 February 1897. He inherited his artistic ability from his father, who was a lithographer. Fleischmann's father insisted that he acquire a profession in addition to his art and so he studied medicine in Prague, specializing in dermatology. He worked as a doctor in Ceske Budejovice. In addition to his medical studies, Fleischmann also studied painting and drawing. In 1937 he published a series of lithographs and, a multi-talented artist, he also wrote poetry and prose. Fleischmann was one of the founders of the avant-garde art group called "The Line".
Like many Jewish Czech artists, Fleischmann suffered from the race laws during World War II and on 18 April 18 1942 he was interned in Terezin. While there, he held important positions in the medical service, where he tried to ease the suffering of his interned comrades.
