John Lane Gardner (1793–1869) served in the U.S. Army eventually achieving the rank of brevetBrigadier General[a] after serving in the American Civil War having also served in the War of 1812, the Second Seminole War and the Mexican–American War. After Gardner retired from military service he devoted time to recruiting for the Army.
Biography
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1793[1] during George Washington's second term Gardner joined the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 where he found his place as a career army officer.[2] Just before the Civil War he was commander of the garrison at Fort Moultrie but was relieved of command because he undermined the plans of Secretary of War John B. Floyd, who would soon join the Confederacy, and was planning to place control of the forts in Charleston Harbor in Confederate hands.[1][3] Gardner served over 40 years in the U.S. Army.[4]

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Gardner; his four sons, Philip, Christian, Nick and Marc; two grandchildren Deja and Tegan; sister Linda and brother Rick Gardner.
Lieutenant General Gardner was born on October 16, 1951, the son of the late Emerson and Anna in the town of Chestertown, Maryland. He graduated from Annapolis High School and then went on to Duke University to major in history. Following graduation from Duke University in 1973, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Over the next 37 years, Lieutenant General Gardner led at every level of command in the Marine Corps, flew every helicopter to include the President's Marine One aircraft and served in every combat zone. John Donovan "Jack" Gardner[1] (born 27 September 1954)[2] is a retired lieutenant general in the United States Army. He is the former deputy commander of the United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany.[3][4] During his career he served in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Bosnia, Iraq and numerous locations throughout the United States. He currently serves as the director of the 21st Century Jobskills Project, a nonprofit organization focused on assisting public school students in transitioning to living wage jobs.[5] Gardner is a native of Columbus, Ohio.[6]
