Born in Hong Kong, Garson is a multimedia artist, film title designer and creative director. A graduate of the Yale School of Art, he worked as a fine artist in NYC in the late 80’s and early 90’s. His work has been shown at the Artists Space, PSI/Clock Tower Gallery, the Dia Art Foundation and was selected for the New York Public Art Fund.

Garson founded yU+co in Los Angeles in 1998. His most notable film and TV title sequences include 300, Watchmen, Life of Pi, The Jungle Book, The Walking Dead and Silicon Valley. His work has earned an Emmy Award and 6 nominations.

Garson’s multimedia work includes a public art exhibition at Pier 57 in NY, and a massive New Year’s Eve projection mapping installation in Grand Park Los Angeles for two years running. His most recent experiential project is a virtual immersive installation of the Buddhist Cave Temples of Dunhuang, on exhibit at The Getty Center in Los Angeles through summer 2016.

Oz the Great and Powerful - Main Title Sequence

This title sequence sets the tone for the audience to enter the unique, imaginative world of the film. Inspired by a pre-cinematic form of 3D entertainment, the theater of perspective, the piece contains layered images arranged to create scenes with rich depth. The piece uses 37 different fonts and carefully designed imagery to match the movie characters and creative credits.

    Garson Yu is a Hong Kong-born American designer. He is the founder and creative director of yU+co in Hollywood, California.

    Biography

    Garson Yu was born in Hong Kong in 1961. Garson attended the Yale School of Art, on the Norman Ives Scholarship in 1985. Upon graduating with the Alexei Brodovitch Prize in 1987, Garson started his career in New York as a freelance designer at R/Greenberg Associates.

    Garson taught graphic design at the School of Visual Arts and exhibited as an artist in New York. He has had group exhibitions at the Artist Space, PS1/Clock Tower Gallery and The Dia Art Foundation. Garson’s design entry won the International AIDS design competition. He was then commissioned by the New York Public Art Fund to design and produce a 30-second television Public Service Announcement on AIDS. In 1992, he worked with Muriel Cooper at the MIT Media Lab to design IBM’s ‘Future Interface Demo’.
