Jerrald King Goldsmith (February 10, 1929 – July 21, 2004) was an American composer and conductor, most known for his work in film and television scoring. He composed scores for five films in the Star Trek franchise and three in the Rambo franchise, as well as for Logan's Run, Planet of the Apes, Patton, Chinatown, Poltergeist, Gremlins, Hoosiers, Total Recall, Air Force One, L.A. Confidential, Mulan, and The Mummy. In May 1997, with the release of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, he gained more popularity with his fanfare of the 1997 Universal Studios opening logo and the short version of the fanfare for its television arms, which would be among the most iconic studio logo music of all-time.

He collaborated with some of film history's most accomplished directors, including Robert Wise, Howard Hawks, Otto Preminger, Joe Dante, Richard Donner, Roman Polanski, Ridley Scott, Michael Winner, Steven Spielberg, Paul Verhoeven, and Franklin J. Prelude

My father was a renowned Hollywood film composer. If he were alive, and not recently dead of cancer, he would read the preceding words and correct me irritably: “Don’t call me a ‘film composer’,” he would have said. “I’m a composer. You don’t refer to Mozart as an ‘opera’ composer.”

My father never minded admitting that once I had saved his life. He would recount a night I called and woke him out of an almost endless slumber fueled by Nembutal and Vodka without a trace of self-consciousness; to him, it was just another amusing anecdote—and he did give me credit for being a hero.

Tessa and Morris Goldsmith. Tessa was an Artist and Morris a Structural Engineer. Jerry Goldsmith began studying piano at the age of 6 and by the age of 14 was studying composition, theory and counterpoint privately with Jacob Gimpel and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. After graduating from Dorsey High School Goldsmith went to Los Angeles City College where he worked on a lot of Opera, Dance and coaching of singers. He became assistant conductor for the opera and chorus as well as accompanist and found time to write music for the drama department for various plays. During this period he became acquainted with legendary composer Miklos Rosza and attended one semester in film music composition at the University of Southern California. This involved re-scoring Flesh And Fantasy (1943) and new music for a documentary on the summer arts school. It was Rosza's own score to Spellbound and the film's star Ingrid Bergman that had captivated Goldsmith back in 1945.
