Jayanthi Natarajan (born 7 June 1954) is an Indian lawyer and politician. She was a member of the Indian National Congress and has been thrice elected Member of Parliament representing the state of Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha. From July 2011 to December 2013, she was the Minister of Forests and Environment (Independent Charge). She resigned as Minister of Environment and Forest on 21 December 2013. On 30 January 2015, she announced in a press conference at Chennai that she would be resigning from the Congress party alleging that "specific requests" by Rahul Gandhi were the basis of whether industrial projects were given clearances by her ministry, and that he shifted from a pro-environmental position to corporate-friendly stand for the elections in 2014.[1]

Krishnaswamy NatarajanPVSM, PTM, TM, is a retired Indian Coast Guard officer who served as the 23rd Director General of the Indian Coast Guard.[2] He assumed the office on 1 July 2019 and served until his superannuation on 31 December 2021.[3][4][5][6] He is currently the Executive Director of Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia - Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP, ISC) in Singapore.

Controversy

In 2025, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) booked K Natarajan for alleged tampering/alteration of the Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs)/dossiers of senior officers. The agency has invoked provisions related to criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery and named Mr. Natarajan as an accused. [1]

Early life

 

Jayanthi Natarajan has been the Union Cabinet Minister of State for Environment and Forests since July 2011. 

 

Born on June 7, 1954, Natarajan comes from a prominent Indian National Congress family in Tamil Nadu. Her grandfather, M Bhaktavatsalam, was a freedom fighter who participated in both the Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India movement. After Independence, he served as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister between 1963-1967.

 

Like her grandfather, Natarajan studied law (at Ethiraj College and Madras Law College). Drafted by Rajeev Gandhi, scion of India's most prominent political dynasty, she also joined the family business. As a Congress woman, Natarajan was first elected to the Rajya Sabha (the upper house) in 1986 and re-elected in 1992.  “I have no doubt that I had a head start in politics due to my grandfather,” she told CNN-IBN viewers during a live online chat.

 

In 1996, Natarajan and a few other Congress politicians, most notably P Chidambaram, broke from the Congress. They formed their own party,
