Myrthen (Myrtles), Op. 25, is a song cycle composed in the spring of 1840 by Robert Schumann. Its 26 Lieder were written as a wedding gift for his fiancée, Clara Wieck, and presented to her on the eve of their wedding which took place on 12 September that year. The cycle was published that same month, with a dedication to Clara, in four books by Kistner in Leipzig where the couple lived.
The texts are poems by various authors, including eight by Robert Burns, translated into German by the poet Wilhelm Gerhard, and several each by Friedrich Rückert, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine. The cycle was originally published in a version for high voice, but has been performed by singers of all voice types, sometimes by a woman and man alternating.

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the most protean singer alive today, sang the first of three recitals lat night in Carnegie Hall, devoting his entire program to songs by Schumann. Has there been any area in which Fischer-Dieskau has not conquered? He is acknowledged to be the greatest of contemporary lieder singers. He has triumphed in opera, singing everything from Handel to Henze. He is a stalwart in oratorio work. His repertory far exceeds that of any singer today, and probably in history. Certainly he has made more records than any singer who has ever lived, in a repertory from the 18th century to the latest moderns.
His singing is an illustration of what sheer will power, plus impeccable musicianship, can do. Many singers have more beautiful voices than Mr. Fischer-Dieskau. Nobody has his kind of intelligence-- an intelligence that has by now ripened into consummate art.

Introducing Elena Fischer-Dieskau, pianist
Born in Berlin, Elena took her first piano lessons at the age of six and started winning first prizes in German national competitions shortly after. She was pre-schooled in the Paris Conservatoire before moving back to Germany for her undergraduate studies. She is the daughter of two professional cellists and granddaughter of the german baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
Ms. Fischer-Dieskau studied at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover with Vladimir Krainev until his death. She then moved to the U.S. to study in the class of Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Institute, where she was awarded a full-scholarship tuition for three years in a row.
After completing her undergraduate studies in Hannover, she obtained her Graduate Performance Diploma at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.
She is a recipient of the PE-Foerderungen Scholarship in Mannheim (Germany), as well as of the Leon Fleisher Scholars Fund.
