David Yurman’s Early Years
David Yurman was born on Long Island, New York in 1942. As a high school student, Yurman sold small sculptures in his school’s cafeteria. But his artistic ambition was really ignited when he met Ernesto Gonzales, a Cuban welder and sculptor. The two met in the artist town of Provincetown, Massachusetts where Yurman was visiting his sister for the summer. Gonzales introduced Yurman to welding, teaching Yurman how to wield a hot torch to heat and fuse metal. About the artist:

Sybil Kleinrock is the wife of jewelry designer, David Yurman. In the late 1960s, David Yurman returned from his journey and quickly started working with a sculptor named Hans Van de Bovenkamp. While working with him, David met Sybil Kleinrock who wore one of David’s pieces to an art opening. This caught the owner’s eye, but David was hesitant on recreating a piece that was so special to him. Together, Sybil and David created designs and later, they married. With opening their store, this laid down the foundation to opening the David Yurman business and brand in the 1980s. "She knocked me out," David told me with real emotion and a sparkle in his eyes, "And the rest is history. We've lived and worked together for 42 years now." Together they began an art business that eventually evolved into turning small sculptures into jewelry. By the mid-1980s they had made a name for themselves with the cable bracelet, a piece that has become a fashion classic and is still a signature item of the company almost three decades later. Interview with David Yurman

While some people believe art only belongs hanging on a wall, David Yurman reverts to a more classical understanding.

“I learned that you don’t separate the commercial and say, ‘Well, that’s commercial. I want to be a fine artist.’ It’s all the same. It’s all art,” says Yurman, the founder of his . He explains that traditionally, art was aesthetically pleasing but also functional; fine arts and applied arts were one and the same.

“Our designs don’t come to life until they’re worn,” he says. “What we are doing is fusing art, fashion, fine jewellery, design, and commerce.”

When he started, Yurman says fashion jewellery mimicked clunky, fake costume jewellery. But three and a half decades ago, his company launched its Cable Bracelet, a piece so bold and beautifully designed, it was likened to wearing fine art. That masterpiece has defined the 21st century jewellery industry.

With his pioneering approach to jewellery design, Yurman intimately connected people with jewellery, and likewise with the richness and beauty of art.
