Sheila cockrel biography

In 2012, Sheila Cockrel along with Wayne State University’s President Emeritus, Dr. Irvin Reid, founded the civic engagement initiative CitizenDetroit. Its mission is to provide factual, non-partisan information so that citizens can makes informed decisions about public policies and candidates running for office.

Cockrel is also the president and chief executive officer of Crossroads Consulting, a full-service public policy and public affairs consultancy.

In her 16 years of service as a Detroit city councilmember, Cockrel provided a consistent voice of reason and earned a reputation for integrity. During her tenure she served as chair of the Budget, Finance, and Audit Standing Committee.

She is a recipient of a 2014 Distinguished Warrior award from the Detroit Urban League.

Drawing on her expertise and experience in local government, she is a frequent guest lecturer and is a regular contributor on local broadcast news media public affairs programs.

Cockrel holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and a Master of Arts in urban planning from Wayne State University.

Sheila Cockrel is founder and CEO of Crossroads Consulting Group, a public policy and public affairs consultancy. Crossroads provides a select and diverse client base with strategic advice and consultation on local government process, protocols and government permitting. Cockrel established Crossroads in 2009 after four consecutive terms on the Detroit City Council. A native Detroiter, she has a long history of social activism in the city. She is co-founder with Dr. Irvin D. Reid of CitizenDetroit, a civic engagement and voter education program based at Wayne State University. Cockrel is an adjunct faculty member in the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at Wayne State University.
