Triumph and turmoil define Dowd Ritter's legacy as CEO of Regions
The chief executive who helped create one of the largest banks in the United States is retiring this week, co-architect of a company whose birth coincided with a nationwide banking collapse that led to enormous shareholder discontent.
Dowd Ritter, 62, on Wednesday will work his final day at Birmingham-based Regions Financial Corp. after almost 41 years with the company and predecessor AmSouth Bancorp., once known as First National Bank. Company President Grayson Hall last year was tapped to succeed Ritter, who served 14 years in the top spot, longer than any other currently serving CEO of a publicly traded Alabama company.
Ritter leaves after a career with many elements to consider. For his harshest critics -- company shareholders -- Ritter is the public face of failure, head man at a bank that has lost money in four of the past five quarters. Shares have fallen 76 percent since the AmSouth-Regions crosstown combination that was supposed to create a stock market colossus.

AmSouth Bancorporation is a regional bank holding company with interests in consumer banking, commercial banking, and wealth management. Through subsidiary AmSouth Bank, the firm operates approximately 600 branch offices and 1,200 ATMs in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Georgia.
AmSouth Bancorporation was incorporated in 1972 to take advantage of new state and federal laws related to the banking industry. Similarly, during the mid-1960s and early 1970s, Congress had eliminated several federal banking industry res
