Biography
Joseph Tito Stanley, born on April 13, 1957, in Auckland, New Zealand, is a former international rugby union player who made his mark as a center for the All Blacks. Known by his nicknames “Smoking Joe” and “Bullet,” Stanley epitomized the robust and reliable center that characterized New Zealand rugby during his era. Though he achieved international recognition relatively late in his career at the age of 29, Stanley became an integral part of the All Blacks’ success in the late 1980s.

   Joe is an active member of the National Farmers Union, currently serving as county chair for Leicestershire, Northants and Rutland. He also sits on the NFU’s national Environment Forum and is the Environment Representative for the Midlands region.
   In 2019 Joe was selected to be an Oxford Farming Conference ‘Emerging Leader’ and is an alumni of the Institute of Agricultural Management’s ‘Leadership Development Course’. In 2020 he was honoured to be the recipient of the NFU’s Meurig Raymond Award for outstanding contribution to industry advocacy. In 2022 he was awarded Associateship of the Royal Agricultural Societies (ARAgS).
   In 2021, Joe became Head of Sustainable Farming at the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Allerton Project, a 320 hectare research and demonstration farm on the Leicestershire/Rutland border. Here, he hopes to help build on the work carried out since 1992 in building more resilient and profitable farming systems in greater harmony with our natural environment.
