Joseph Simon Newman

American poet

Joseph Simon Newman (December 6, 1891 – November 10, 1960) was an American entrepreneur and writer. He was a founder of the Newman-Stern Company,[1][2] and gained renown as a writer of both light and serious verse.

Biography

Joseph Newman was born in New London, Ohio, the son of Simon and Hanna Cohn Newman, who then moved to Cleveland. A graduate of Central High School, Newman attended the Case Institute of Technology before withdrawing to go into business. He married Babette Weidenthal, daughter of Cleveland journalist Maurice Weidenthal, in 1913. Two years later, with brother Arthur Samuel Newman and partner Arnold Stern, he founded the Electro-Set Co. to manufacture educational toys, some being his own inventions. The firm soon added sporting goods to its line and became the Newman-Stern Company. Newman meanwhile began writing columns on electricity for The Plain Dealer and contributing humorous rhymes to Ted Robinson's "Philosopher of Folly" column under the pseudonym, "Prof. Cy N. Tific." NEWMAN, JOSEPH SIMON (6 Dec. 1891-10 Nov. 1960) earned his living as a founder of the NEWMAN-STERN CO. and gained renown as a writer of light verse. Born in New London, O., he was the son of Simon and Hanna Cohn Newman, who soon brought him to Cleveland. A graduate of CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, Newman attended Case Institute of Technology (see CASE WESTERN RESERVE) before withdrawing to go into business. He married Babette Weidenthal, daughter of Cleveland journalist Maurice Weidenthal, in 1913. Two years later, with brother Arthur S. Newman and partner Arnold Stern, he founded the Electro-Set Co. to manufacture educational toys, some being of his own invention. The firm soon added sporting goods to its line and became the Newman-Stern Co. Newman meanwhile began writing columns on electricity for the PLAIN DEALERand contributing humorous rhymes to TED ROBINSON's "Philosopher of Folly" column under the pseudonym, "Prof. Cy N. Tific." Biography:

I am a hip and knee surgeon with a particular interest in hip preservation surgery. I was trained on the Northwest Thames Rotation where I completed a PhD on unicompartmental knee replacement in parallel with my clinical work under the supervision of Prof Justin Cobb. I completed fellowships in Bournemouth and Oxford before being appointed as a substantive consultant in Oxford. I continue to have a strong interest in research and I am involved in both pre-clinical and clinical studies in Oxford and London. I live in London with my wife and 3 very energetic small boys who between them consume my free time!
