Sherman A. Jackson,[1]also known asAbdul Hakim Jackson[2](born 1956)[3]is an Americanscholar of Islam.
Career
Jackson is the King Faisal Chair of Islamic Thought and Culture and Professor of Religion and American Studies and Ethnicity at theUniversity of Southern California.[4]Jackson was formerly the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Near Eastern Studies, visiting professor of law and professor of Afro-American Studies at theUniversity of Michigan.
Jackson received his Ph.D. from theUniversity of Pennsylvaniaand has taught at theUniversity of Texas at Austin,Indiana University,Wayne State Universityand theUniversity of Michigan. From 1987 to 1989, he served as executive director of the Center of Arabic Study Abroad inCairo, Egypt. He is author of several books, includingIslamic Law and the State: The Constitutional Jurisprudence of Shihâb al-Dîn al-Qarâfî(E.J. Jackson says being called Chief by his colleagues is one of his greatest honors. “Sometimes I still can’t believe it when I hear it,” says Jackson. He says being chief is about having and earning respect. “Respect is never simply given,” says Jackson. “It’s earned, and I’m honored to have earned it from my fellow men and women in blue.” Long before Jackson was elected chief and won the admiration of the citizens of Gonzales, he was just like any other child with a goal, trying to find ways to accomplish that goal.
