Blanca Lilia Almaguer de Campillo was born in Monterrey Nuevo León Mexico. She came to the United States at the age of eight and grew up in Chicago Illinois. As a child Ms. Campillo enjoyed nature and was deeply connected to being outdoors biking, hiking, collecting unusual plants and playing outdoor sports. As an English language learner Ms. Campillo found solace in studying and analyzing the art and language from books and with a library card in hand developed a love of books and reading. Ms. Campillo taught first grade bilingual children at the Saucedo Scholastic Academy located in the Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. As a bilingual teacher Ms. Campillo loved to teach science and social studies through informational text and authentic stories from around the world to her primary students. One challenge that she often faced as a teacher was finding quality text in the students native language and for this reason she found creative ways to make sure her students had access to the text by translating and sometimes creating her own books.
