Biography:

Maria Teresa Tula is a leader of the Co-Madres (Mothers of the Disappeared) of El Salvador, a group of impoverished, mostly illiterate women whose husbands or children were kidnapped or killed by death squads and government security forces during El Salvador’s bloody civil war. The 1980s conflict pitted leftist organizations and campesino farmer-based guerrillas against an entrenched alliance of landowners and the military, with each side aided by different Cold War backers. In 1992, when a peace accord was signed by the government and the Farabundo Martí Liberation Front, the reign of terror that had ruled El Salvador for over a decade finally ended. After Tula was threatened, abducted, and tortured, she returned to Co-Madres to continue her work for justice and for women’s empowerment. A self-described feminist, Tula escaped to the United States, crossing the border as an illegal alien. She spent the next several years running the Co-Madres office in Washington, D.C., and fighting deportation for herself and all Salvadorans. She now lives in the U.S., fulfilling

Tula nació en Izalco el 23 de abril de 1951. Fue criada por su abuela y asistió a la escuela dos años antes de tener su primer hijo a los quince años, vivía con sus hermanos, hermanas y hermanastros. Conoció a José Rafael Canales Guevara, quien era herrero cuando tenía dieciséis años.[1]​ Guevara fue arrestado por organizar a los trabajadores contra la dirección. Tula se unió al grupo llamado COMADRES, una agrupación que creada en 1977, con el apoyo del entonces arzobispo de El Salvador, Oscar Arnulfo Romero; el arzobispo fue asesinado en 1980 al igual que el marido de Tula.[2]​ El cuerpo de su marido fue encontrado con una herida de bala en la cabeza dos días después de que las personas, que dijeron que eran policías, se lo llevaron para ayudarlo en una investigación
