Louis Allen "Lou" Rawls (born in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 1 December 1933 – 6 January 2006) was an American soul music, jazz, and blues singer. He was known for his smooth vocal style: Frank Sinatra once said that Rawls had "the classiest singing and silkiest chops in the singing game".Rawls released more than 70 albums, sold more than 40 million records, appeared as an actor in motion pictures and on television, and voiced-over many cartoons. He had been called "The Funkiest Man Alive".
Lou Rawls, who learned of gospel music through his grandmother in Chicago, became a successful singer, primarily from the 1950s through the 1980s. He was a high school classmate of music giant Sam Cooke, and they sang together in the Teenage Kings of Harmony, a '50s gospel group.
After graduating from Chicago's Dunbar Vocational High School, he sang briefly with Cooke in the Teenage Kings of Harmony, a local gospel group, and then with the Holy Wonders. In 1951, Rawls replaced Cooke in the Highway QC's after Cooke departed to join The Soul Stirrers

Lou Rawls was an award-winning singer and songwriter famous for his luxurious baritone singing voice and four-octave vocal range. He is most well-known for his hit song “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine,” and experienced the height of his musical career throughout the 1960s and ‘70s.
Born Louis Allen Rawls on December 1, 1933 in the south side of Chicago, Rawls was raised by his grandmother and began singing in his church’s choir at age seven. As a teenager Rawls formed a gospel harmony group called the Teenage Kings of Harmony with his friend (and future famed singer) Sam Cooke. Before long Rawls joined another group called the Holy Wonders, then in 1951 joined the Highway Q.C.’s, replacing Cooke. Three years later Rawls sang with the Chosen Gospel Singers, and soon after joined the Pilgrim Travelers. In 1956 Rawls quit the group to become a paratrooper in the Army where he rose to sergeant, and was discharged in 1958. Louis Allen Rawls (December 1, 1933 – January 6, 2006) was an American baritone singer.[1] He released 61 albums, sold more than 40 million records,[2] and had numerous charting singles, most notably the song "You'll Never Find Another Love like Mine". He also worked as a film, television, and voice actor. He was a three-time winner of the Best Male R&B Vocal PerformanceGrammy Award.
Early life
Rawls was born in Chicago on December 1, 1933, and raised by his grandmother in the Ida B. Wellsprojects on the city's South Side. He began singing in the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church choir at the age of seven and later sang with local groups through which he met Sam Cooke, who was nearly three years older, and Curtis Mayfield.[3][4]
