A History of the Ethiopian Student Movement, 1960-1974

The Ethiopian Student Movement, which went through successive stages of self-awareness, reformism, and revolutionary commitment, forms an essential backdrop to the 1974 Ethiopian Revolution. To it can be traced the overthrow of one of the oldest monarchies in the world, the ultimately disastrous policy of socialist construction, and the current experiment in ethnic federalism. And yet, most assessments of the post-1974 situation in Ethiopia do not seem to be informed by an understanding of this backdrop. The project aims to fill this gap by writing a definitive history of that movement.
I have already done extensive research on the subject, consulting both the secondary literature and the contemporary publications of student unions inside and outside the country. More recently, I organized an innovative four-day collective exercise in recollection by some two dozen former student leaders and activists. Distinguished historian and author Bahru Zewde (Professor Emeritus) is regarded as one of the foremost Ethiopian historians who have made significant contributions to a comprehensive professional historiography of the nation, with an emphasis on the years after 1855.

He is the author of several books; A History of Modern Ethiopia 1855–1991, Pioneers of Change In Ethiopia: the Reformist Intellectuals of the Early Twentieth Century, Society & State in Ethiopian History, The Quest for Socialist Utopia: The Ethiopian Student Movement, and others.

Aside from teaching history at Addis Ababa University, Bahru serves as president of the Association of Ethiopian Historians, which is tasked with scholarly counteracting historiography’s distortions.

The renowned historian has insight and answers when it comes to handling conflicting historical perspectives that put Ethiopia’s nation-building at risk. The Reporter’s Bewket Abebe sat down with him to discuss Ethiopia’s nation building journey and the difficulties it has encountered.

Professor Bahru Zewde, Lifetime Professor and the board member of Addis Ababa University (AAU), has launched his new autobiographical book entitled, ‘Hibir Hiwote’, in collaboration with the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Office of External Relations, Partnerships and Communications, Society of Friends of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies and History Department of AAU at the historic Ras Mekonnen Hall on July 6, 2023.

Shimelis Bonsa (PhD), an associate professor and researcher of African modern and contemporary history as an associate professor at Stony Brook University in New York, stated that Professor Bahru’s autobiography is the first autobiographical essay written by a pioneering Ethiopian historian in the field of autobiographical writings.
