Pedro Alvarez
Alvarez is an independent composer, improviser, and educator. His creative work looks for new forms of musical narrative, often articulating highly detailed textures in contrast with abrupt forms. Research interests include music notation, aesthetics and politics, postcolonialism, and musical thinking since the 1960’s.
In 2014 Alvarez completed a PhD guided by Liza Lim, obtaining the ‘Vice-Chancellor’s Award for an outstanding Research Degree Thesis’ at the University of Huddersfield, where he also took editorial responsibility of issue 4 of the CeReNeM Journal. Previous degrees include a Master of Philosophy from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a Master of Arts and Licentiate from Universidad de Chile, both awarded with ‘maximum distinction’. Beside formal studies, in 2006 a Chilean Arts Council scholarship allowed Alvarez to study composition privately with James Dillon in London and to benefit from numerous workshops including with Julio Estrada, Chaya Czernowin and Pierluigi Billone.

I am an independent composer, improviser, educator and activist born in Chile and currently based on Whadjuk-Noongar land in Perth, Western Australia. Having been professionally trained in the European classical tradition, in recent years my musical practice has increasingly focused on free improvisation and Andean folk music, looking for meaningful ways of articulating these three musical streams in my creative work. Research interests include music notation, aesthetics and politics, music and mental health, and anti-colonial perspectives.
While remaining an outsider to the corporatism that pervades the arts establishment in Australia, and free from institutional affiliations, in recent years I’ve taught music and aesthetics as a sessional lecturer and tutor at Edith Cowan University, and University of Western Australia. I have also given guest lectures on my work at Monash University, University of Leeds, Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, City University London, and various Latin American cultural centres. Additionally, I’ve served as a peer in mult
