Marwan Jamil Muasher studied at the American University of Beirut before coming to Purdue to complete his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering. Shortly after receiving his Ph.D. in 1981, Muasher returned to Jordan to work at the Jordan Electric Power Company and the Research Institute at the University of Petroleum and Minerals. He founded the Jordan Computer Society and wrote political columns for the Jordanian Times. These activities led him to a position in the Ministry of Planning, where he used his knowledge of computers to spearhead a project to build a national socio-economic database. He later served as assistant to the prime minister, and eventually as part of the Jordanian delegation in Washington, D.C.

Muasher began his career as a journalist for the Jordan Times. He then served at the Ministry of Planning, at the prime minister’s office as press adviser, and as director of the Jordan Information Bureau in Washington.

In 1995, Muasher opened Jordan’s first embassy in Israel, and in 1996 he became minister of information and the government spokesperson. From 1997 to 2002, he served in Washington again as ambassador, negotiating the first free-trade agreement between the United States and an Arab nation. He then returned to Jordan to serve as foreign minister, where he played a central role in developing the Arab Peace Initiative and the Middle East roadmap.

Marwan al-Muasher (Arabic: مروان المعشر) (born 1956) is a former Jordanian diplomat and politician who was Jordan's foreign minister from 2002 to 2004 and its deputy prime minister during 2004 and 2005. He currently serves as vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he oversees research on the Middle East. He was Jordan's first ambassador to Israel and former ambassador to the United States.^[1]^[2]

Education and early career

Muasher attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1977, a Master of Science degree in computer engineering in 1978, and a PhD, also in computer engineering, in 1981.^[3]
