1) A nose for goal

Born on 3 February 1960 as the oldest of four brothers in the town of Schönau in south-west Germany, Löw completed his school education at the age of 17 before beginning an apprenticeship as a wholesaler. With a back-up plan in the bag to appease the parents, Löw could now focus on his football career, and in 1978 he joined the region's biggest club, SC Freiburg, for the first of three spells.

Standing at 6'0" he wasn't the biggest of strikers, but he was certainly effective. His haul of 83 goals in 263 competitive outings for the Black Forest outfit was the club record until overtaken by Nils Petersen a few years ago. Joachim Low is the former head coach of the German national team, who he steered to FIFA World Cup glory in 2014. He left his role following Euro 2020 after 15 years at the helm.

Low was appointed German national team head coach in 2006 following the departure of Jurgen Klinsmann, under whom Low had previously served as an assistant. After falling at the final hurdle against Spain in the 2008 Euros, two consecutive semi-final exits at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 preceded their triumph in 2014.

Along with lifting the World Cup in 2014, 'Jogi' led Germany to their first ever FIFA Confederations Cup by beating Chile.

Joachim "Jogi" Löw (German pronunciation:[ˈjoːaxɪmˈløːf];[2] born 3 February 1960) is a German football coach and former player. He was the manager of the Germany national team from 2006 until 2021. During his tenure as manager, he led Germany to victory at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. In March 2021, Löw announced that he would resign from his position after the delayed Euro 2020.[3] Of all head coaches of the Germany national football team, Löw has managed and won the most matches (189/120).[4]

Playing career

In 1978, Löw started his playing career with 2. Bundesliga club SC Freiburg. He returned to the club twice (1982, 1985) and held the club's overall goal scoring record until 2020, when Nils Petersen surpassed him.[5] In 1980, Löw joined VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, but he had difficulties establishing himself in the starting lineup and played only four matches.
