Milton Diamond, Ph.D. is a sexologist who has published numerous articles pertaining to his long interest and research on sexual identity formation and sexuality. From early on in his career, Dr. Diamond has investigated claims about the malleability of sexual identity and along with H. Keith Sigmundson, MD, Dr. Diamond successfully challenged the conclusions of an important case study conducted by the renowned medical psychologist, Dr. John Money. The so-called John/Joan case was originally presented as proof that altering the infant's upbringing and genitals could easily change a child's sexual identity. Thousands of "sex reassignments," with accompanying surgeries were performed based on conclusions erroneously extracted from this example. Milton Diamond (March 6, 1934^[2] – March 20, 2024) was an American professor of anatomy and reproductive biology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.^[3] After a career in the study of human sexuality, Diamond retired from the university in December 2009 but continued with his research and writing until retiring fully in 2018.^[4] He died on March 20, 2024, at the age of 90.^[5]^[2]

Early career

Milton Diamond graduated from the City College of New York with a BS in biophysics in 1955,^[1]^[2] after which he spent three years in the Army as an engineering officer, stationed in Japan.^[6] On returning to the United States, he attended graduate school at University of Kansas from 1958 to 1962 where he earned a PhD in anatomy and psychology.^[6]^[2] His first job was teaching at the University of Louisville, School of Medicine where he simultaneously completed two years toward a Doctor of Medicine, passing his Basic Medicine Board

Burns School of Medicine, died in Honolulu, Hawai’i, on March 20, 2024 at the age of 90 from cardiac arrest.
