After years of fine-tuning, Becoming Led Zeppelin finally has a release date and trailer. The first official documentary on Led Zeppelin arrives in IMAX theaters on February 7. In the new teaser, footage of the legendary British band over the years is interspersed with present-day interviews, old home movies, and live concerts. It also reveals that the documentary features a never-before-heard interview with the late John Bonham. Watch it below.

As the first authorized documentary on the band, Becoming Led Zeppelin tells the story of Led Zeppelin in the members’ own words. In addition to new interviews with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones, it boasts unearthed material from all four members’ personal archives. Director Bernard MacMahon also successfully uncovered previously unseen footage from the band’s 1969 concerts at the Atlanta Pop Festival, the Fillmore West, and the Texas Pop Festival.

From the start, director Bernard MacMahon and writer and producer Allison McGourty knew there would be obstacles involved in making a documentary about Led Zeppelin, especially one done with the band’s cooperation. This is a group that has famously and diligently guarded its legacy, always maintaining a sense of mystique and rebuffing many earlier pitches for a movie like that. “Our sense was that there was absolutely no intention of ever doing a Zeppelin film,” MacMahon says.

Atop that challenge was the matter of what would actually be in the film, since Zeppelin footage is as hard to find as someone in the Seventies who didn’t own a copy of Led Zeppelin IV.  As lead singer Robert Plant told the team at a meeting, bringing up their notoriously belligerent manager Peter Grant, “I don’t think this can be told. Becoming Led Zeppelin is a 2025 documentary film directed by Bernard MacMahon which charts the formation and early years of Led Zeppelin.[4] The film is an independent production made with the full co-operation of the band[5] and represents the first time Led Zeppelin have agreed to participate in a biographical documentary.[6] A work-in-progress was screened at the 78thVenice Film Festival in 2021[7][8] to a 10-minute standing ovation.[9]
