While American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars has reached a new high in his music career by winning six Grammy awards, many fans recall an interview he gave last year in which he hailed his mother as “more than my music.”
Mars, whose real name is Peter Gene Hernandez, was born in Hawaii in 1985 to Peter Hernandez and a Filipino mum – Bernadette San Pedro Bayot. He was raised in the Waikiki area in Honolulu.
Bayot was Filipina singer and dancer in Hawaii. She died in 2013 due to a brain aneurysm.
Speaking with Latina Magazine in early 2017, Mars described his mother as the woman who taught him to love and showed him “what a woman is supposed to be”.
“If I could trade music to have her back, I would. I always hear her say, ‘Keep going and keep doing it’,” Mars said in the interview.
On Sunday, Mars won all three major awards at 60th Annual Grammy Awards – Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year. He also won three awards in the rhythm and blues section: Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album.
