Sade (pronounced shah-day) is an English band formed in London in 1982, named after their lead singer, Sade Adu. Their music features elements of soul, quiet storm, smooth jazz and sophisti-pop. All of their albums, including compilations and a live album, have charted in the US Top Ten.
Three of their members were originally from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Sade was formed in 1982, when members of Latin soul band Pride — Sade Adu, (real name Helen Folasade Adu - born 16 January 1959 in Ibadan, Nigeria) Stuart Matthewman and Paul Spencer Denman — together with Paul Cook formed a splinter group and began to write their own material. Sade made their debut in December 1982 at Ronnie Scott's Club in London, England, in support of Pride. Later, in 1983, Andrew Hale joined Sade. In 1984 Paul Cook left the band.

Sade (“sha-day”) was born with the name Helen in Nigeria to a British mother and Nigerian father. The name “Helen” being alien to Nigerian ears, they called her “Sade”, a variant of her middle name. Her parents divorced when she was an infant, her mother raising her in Britain. Sade worked as a model and fashion designer for several years, and was involved in designing outfits that Spandau Ballet wore on their first American tour. But her heart was in music, and at age 21 Sade joined Arriva, a Latin-influenced funk group, and co-wrote “Smooth Operator” with the band’s guitarist, Ray St. John. Without a recording contract, though, the tune was heard only in nightclubs where Arriva performed.

Helen Folasade AduCBE (Yoruba: Fọláṣadé Adú[fɔ̄láʃādéādú]; born 16 January 1959), known professionally as Sade Adu or simply Sade (SHAH-day or shah-DAY),[5][6][7] is a Nigerian-British singer, known as the lead vocalist of her band Sade. One of the most successful British female artists in history, she is often recognised as an influence on contemporary music.[8][9][10] Her success in the music industry was recognised with the honour Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2002, and she was made Commander in the 2017 Birthday Honours.[11]
Sade was born in Ibadan, British Nigeria, and was brought up in England from the age of four. She studied at Saint Martin's School of Art in London and gained modest recognition as a fashion designer and part-time model before joining the band Pride in the early 1980s. After gaining attention as a performer, she formed the band Sade, and secured a recording contract with Epic Records in 1983.
