Meredith was not yet 40 when she rewrote riding history as the first woman ever to reach the No. 1 position in the 2008 Rolex World Show Jumping rankings. She would hold that ranking for 11 consecutive months, lifting the daughter of director Richard Michaels and actor Kristina Hansen to the equestrian equivalent of movie-star status. Photogenic and fearless, she dispelled presumptions about gender and ability with each new victory gallop and went on to become the first woman to win three (2005, 2008, 2009) world cup finals.

Her illustrious career, begun as a pony equitation rider growing up in Los Angeles, California, has included team gold at the 1999 European championships, gold medals from the 1999 and 2001 ladies German championships, and eight nations cup victories. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Meredith Michaels Beerbaum started to ride and compete as a little girl. She racked up awards and ribbons in young rider categories, both in hunter competitions and in international show jumping.

In 1991, on summer break from studying political science at Princeton University, Meredith went to Germany to ride with Paul Schockemoehle.

What was meant to be a short time away turned into a turning point for Meredith: she decided to move to Germany permanently, marrying Markus Beerbaum, changing her citizenship and purchasing a property in Thedinghausen with her husband.

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum has been ‘first’ on many occasions: the first woman to earn a place on the German team at the European Championships, and the first female equestrian in the world to reach the number one position on the FEI ranking for jumping. Since 1989, the year she won her first victory at the Wellington Grand Prix, Meredith has collected wins and medals in the top competitions in the world.

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (born 26 December 1969) is an American-born Germanequestrian who competes at the international level in show jumping.[1]

Career

She grew up riding ponies and had a successful career as a Young Rider, both in equitation and in show jumping. As a young-adult, Michaels-Beerbaum studied political science at Princeton University, continuing to compete during her college years. She then went to train in Germany with Paul Schockemöhle in 1991, planning to remain only for a summer, which eventually turned into a permanent stay. She decided to buy the training center in Balve.

Personal life

She was born in Los Angeles, California, and is the daughter of film director Richard Michaels and actor Kristina Hansen.

Following her marriage to the well-known German show jumper Markus Beerbaum in 1998, she changed her citizenship. Together the Beerbaums have one daughter, Brianne Victoria Beerbaum, born in 2010. Through her marriage, Michaels-Beerbaum is also sister-in-law to Ludger Beer
